6 reasons why your hair is dry…

Is your hair dull, brittle and broken? Sounds like you’re lacking in sebum, the natural oil produced by the scalp, that helps your hair retain moisture. Dry hair is an affliction of many, but it may not have been a hair concern you were born with. When it comes to hair it’s what’s on the outside that counts, and as we age it’s natural to produce less oil to help moisturise the scalp and hair. However, when we damage the cuticle - the protective layer that shields the hair shaft - we compromise our hairs ability to hold moisture. Read on to discover how you’re unwittingly drying out your hair and how to turn things around…

Excessive Washing

Frequent washing strips the hair of sebum and dries out the cuticle leading to breakage. This is even more true for those of you with curly manes, since this hair type is more prone to dryness as the sebum is unable to penetrate the full length of the hair fibre. Washing once or twice a week is enough for most hair types, and if you’ve worked out or need to refresh your curls simply rinse hair with water in-between washes so as not to strip the hair of it’s all important oil.

Heat Styling

The quickest route to dry hair is excessive heat directly on the hair fibre or scalp. However, rather than ditch heated tools altogether, try to reduce your usage and always apply a heat protectant like KERLUXE Multi-tasking 360 Styling Cream. This will protect the hair fibre from heat damage, leaving your mane smooth and frizz free.

Colour Changes

Bleach and the chemicals found in dyes can be extremely harsh, and will without a doubt dry out your tresses. They seriously strip moisture from the hair structure, so if you’re an avid colour changer, always use a quality nourishing and reparative mask like KERLUXE Aquavol Mask, once a week and a colour protecting and conditioning conditioner such as the KERLUXE Luminage Conditioner, after every wash to maintain moisture.

Unsuitable Products

Analyse your arsenal; if your haircare products don’t provide hydration and moisture they are not for you. Clarifying shampoos should be avoided as they tend to be too harsh for dry hair types and will simply strip your scalp and hair of the little moisture it has. As too will texturising styling products like salt sprays.

Environmental Damage

Overexposure to the elements could be another factor contributing to your dry hair woes. Rain, sun, heat, UV, cold winds and low humidity will dry out hair leaving it brittle and easily broken. When you find yourself in a hot climate spray the hair with a high factor SPF to protect it from moisture sapping sun rays. While in colder climes wear a hat to protect the hair from drying strong winds and to keep it from getting wet in the rain, as hair is most weak and vulnerable when wet.

Water Exposure

Not all water is the same, and chlorinated water is one of the most damaging for the hair. It strips the natural oils from your tresses leaving them dry and prone to splitting. The best way to prevent damage is to rinse the hair with fresh clean water before swimming, as hair is porous and will absorb less when wet, thus creating a barrier to the chlorinated water. Once your swimming session is over, rinse the hair again with fresh water to rid any residual chlorine from the hair.
