Protein in Hair Care

Your hair needs this nutrient…

In recent years we’ve not been able to get enough of protein. We’re drinking it, eating it, and constantly counting how much we’re consuming. However, what we should also be doing is making sure our haircare is packed full of it.

Not only detrimental for the body, an insufficient amount of protein in your diet can cause restricted hair growth. But, it’s worth noting that ingesting protein is not the only way to heal your hair.

Our hair is almost entirely made of protein (long chains of amino acids), in fact it makes up about 90 per cent of its dry weight. The outside of each hair strand is made up of keratinised protein scales that strengthen and protect the hair shaft. These proteins vary in size, with larger protein molecules forming the hard elements of the hair structure that make it strong. Smaller protein molecules make the hair softer, flexible and hold the hard elements together.

When closed, the hair cuticle locks in much needed nutrients and moisture. However, brushing, blow-drying and bleaching can damage the outside of the hair shaft, causing splitting, roughness and breakage by exposing the fragile hair cuticle on the inside.

If the cuticle becomes damaged, protein-based haircare is the answer thanks to its ability to retain moisture, add volume, reduce porosity, improve smoothness and repair the damage caused by heat, styling and environmental pollutants. How is this done? There is a chemical attraction between the protein in haircare and the protein in your hair, so any additional protein binds to the hair helping to fill and reconstitute the cuticle structure.

Not all protein treatments are made equal, so look for ones that include silk proteins. They help to improve the shine of the hair while boosting elasticity to prevent breakage. These proteins are also easily absorbed into the inner cortex of the hair, fortifying and repairing from within.

Packed full of said proteins is the KERLUXE Resplendisse collection. Specifically designed to repair and nourish the silk proteins are able to form a protective barrier to ward off breakage, reactivate curls, smooth frizz, lock in moisture, restore elasticity and shine.
