5 Surprising Haircare No No’s.

By Kerluxe May 23, 2018

There are many things we do to our hair that can damage it – tight high ponytails may be obvious, but others not so much. Read on to discover the common mistakes you’ve been making…

Water Damage

Hair is most elastic when wet, making brushing post washing a no no. Why? Brushing can pull the hair and when wet the hair has the capacity to stretch even further than when dry. Overstretching the hair shaft can cause irreversible damage that leads to breakage. In order to avoid this, simply brush hair when it’s dry before washing and then if absolutely necessary, use your fingers or a wide comb to detangle while your conditioner works its magic.

Under Cover

Protecting your hair from the sun is almost as important as protecting your skin. Not only can sun exposure leave our bodies dehydrated it can dehydrate your mane too – cue a hallow of frizz. Then there’s your hair colour. Expect for your locks to lighten if they’re not shielded from the sun, as UV rays break down pigment. They also cause hair to lose protein which induces breakage. The trick is to reduce the amount of time you spend in the sun, cover your hair when you are outside, use an spf and a reparative serum like Caviar4 Hair Serum Elixir.

The One

All brushes are not made equal, wonder whether you’re using the right one? If your hair is delicate and fine you should be using a natural boar bristled brush as they are super gentle and glide through locks without snagging. Dry hair will also benefit from this brush as the bristles distribute the oils from your scalp along the hair for much needed moisture. Brushes with mixed bristles are ideal for curly hair types, the natural bristles smooth cuticles to eliminate frizz, while the synthetic bristles help detangle. Use a paddle brush if you have thick, straight or long hair as they cover more ground at one time, smooth and are anti-static too. While Denman Classic Styling brushes are ideal for afro textured hair, as the thick rubber base adds tension when brushing, enabling you to brush more easily.

Deep Clean

When you’re time poor and need to eek out your blow-dry for at least one more day, dry shampoo is a godsend. However, if you’re using these oil absorbing powders 2-3 times in a row you’re doing your hair a disservice. Not only are oil and dirt building up on the scalp and blocking follicles, so to is your dry shampoo, which can lead to a reduction in hair growth and loss of hair. Be sure to use an exfoliating ultra clarifying shampoo, like Crystalisse Hair Shampoo, if you’re a regular dry-shampoo user.

Oils Well

If you’re an avid swimmer or simply enjoy a dip on holiday, make sure your hair is soaking wet before you get into the pool. Hair that is already wet won’t absorb as much chemical filled pool water as hair that’s bone dry. For added protection coat your wet hair with Resplendisse Hair Supreme Oil. By doing this you reduce the amount of sebum stripped away by chlorine and avoid over drying and subsequent breakage.
